A Wave of Returnees

Following years of conflict, approximately 1.2 million individuals displaced by war have begun to return to Sudan since the end of 2024. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported that a substantial number of these returnees are gravitating towards Khartoum, a city that once stood as the epicenter of intense fighting.

Once a bustling metropolis, Khartoum has suffered extensive damage due to the ongoing conflict, with many buildings reduced to rubble and essential services disrupted. The military’s control over parts of the capital has improved since March, allowing some citizens to cautiously return and assess the damage to their homes and communities.

Hope Amidst Destruction

Despite the devastation, many returnees express a fervent desire to rebuild their lives. Local residents have begun clearing debris and initiating repairs, demonstrating resilience and a strong commitment to their communities. Many families are finding temporary shelter with relatives or in makeshift accommodations while they survey their properties.

Challenges Ahead

While the spirit of rebuilding is palpable, returnees face significant challenges. The lack of basic services such as water, electricity, and healthcare continues to hinder efforts to restore normalcy. Additionally, security concerns linger as sporadic violence remains a reality in the area.

Government and NGO Support

The Sudanese government, alongside several NGOs, is working to facilitate the return process, providing assistance to those who have lost everything. This includes food aid, shelter options, and help with employment opportunities. However, the scale of need far exceeds the resources currently available.
