Apple Plans AI Comeback with Siri, Robots, and Smart Home Upgrades

Apple’s Ambitious AI Revival

Apple is reportedly preparing a major comeback in artificial intelligence, focusing on AI-powered products and enhanced Siri capabilities. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple aims to unify its AI efforts under a new Siri, code-named Linwood, and expand its ecosystem into robotics and smart home devices.

LLM Siri: The Next-Gen Assistant

The core of Apple's AI push is Linwood, a new version of Siri built on a large language model (LLM). Unlike the previous keyword-based system, this Siri can use personal context, interact with on-screen content, and perform tasks across apps. Testing also involves a parallel project, Glenwood, using external AI models like Anthropic's Claude. Linwood's debut has been delayed to ensure all Siri functions are unified under the new LLM architecture.

Robotic Innovations

Apple is developing multiple robots, the most prominent being a tabletop robot with a movable arm and a screen, intended to act as a 'person in the room.' Nicknamed 'Bubbles,' it will integrate the new Siri and offer FaceTime interactions, personality, and helpful information during conversations. Additional robotics projects include wheeled robots and mechanical arms for manufacturing or retail assistance, with potential releases spanning 2027 and beyond.

Smart Home OS: Charismatic

To support these devices, Apple is designing a new smart home operating system called Charismatic. Its first application is a 7-inch smart display that can manage home automation, music playback, web browsing, and FaceTime. Features include facial recognition for personalized interfaces and an emphasis on voice and widget controls.

Other Smart Home Devices

Apple is also planning AI-powered smart home cameras, like the J450, which utilize facial recognition and infrared sensors for security and automation. These cameras are designed to optimize energy use and personalize home experiences, such as adjusting lighting or playing preferred music when someone enters a room. Other smart products, including AI-integrated doorbells, are also in development.

Apple’s AI Strategy and Challenges

Despite its historical lead in personal AI assistants, Apple has fallen behind competitors. By introducing AI with personality and integrating it into home products, the company hopes to reinvigorate its image and appeal to users. However, Apple has a history of ambitious projects like the Apple Car and Vision Pro that either missed timelines or underperformed, suggesting cautious optimism is warranted.
